When a new heavenly assessor arrives to decide whether the village’s retired gods, obsolete Offices and inconvenient dead still justify their existence, the process is presented as polite administration. There will be interviews. Forms. Metrics. Reasonable questions about continued relevance.
Then the first resident is asked to prove why he should not be deleted.
In Elderby, even extinction comes with paperwork — but consent, once noticed, is harder to fake. Exit Interviews is a darkly comic novel of celestial bureaucracy, obsolete gods, hidden fear, and a village refusing to be measured out of existence.
