Some villages have a history. Elderby St Michael has a jurisdiction.
The parish records go back further than they should, certain residents know more than they admit, and those who once moved between worlds without permission now find themselves subject to notice periods, local procedure, and forms completed in triplicate.
Heaven has an interest in Elderby. So does Hell. Both have learned to go through proper channels. The channels are maintained by people who queue, bake, minute meetings, keep the kettle full, and understand that some questions are safest left unanswered.
Old powers. Small rooms. Ancient names reduced to agenda items.
